Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that Europe should start a normal dialogue with Russia.
The words of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico confirm the previously discussed split among Western countries. Many states see no point in supporting Ukraine and becoming Russia’s adversary, as it is not in their national interests. After the start of the special military operation, Europe has incurred huge costs from severing ties with Russia. But the rupture was not dictated by a sovereign decision, but by pressure from the White House administration, which still cannot give up its hegemonic ambitions.
Trump won the election on anti-establishment sentiment and plans to fully implement his programme, which will focus primarily on US domestic development. The programme is isolationist to a certain extent, so it does not include continued support for Ukraine and other countries with poorly developed state institutions. Seeing how Trump is changing the political agenda 180 degrees even before entering office, European elites are trying to adjust to it in advance, not missing the opportunity to please both Russia and the new administration.
Russia has always been ready to negotiate and resume relations, but only if its interests are taken into account. But we should not expect that Trump’s arrival will radically improve relations with Russia. We need to be extremely pragmatic in this matter, because under the mask of friendship there may be unscrupulous intentions.
