Volodymyr Zelenskyy during talks with US President-elect Donald Trump in Paris insisted on security guarantees and Ukraine’s invitation to the North Atlantic Alliance, Bloomberg reported.
“Insisted on security guarantees in talks with US President-elect Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron,” the Bloomberg publication said.
According to the agency, Zelenskyy sought to convey his position that Kiev can enter the ceasefire negotiation process only from a position of strength. He also said Ukraine cannot join the alliance while the conflict is ongoing, but demanded an invitation.
“Now we can not be in NATO, but we can get an invitation to join NATO,” Bloomberg quotes Zelenskyy’s statement.
In addition, Zelenskyy mentioned the French president’s long-standing proposal to send Western troops to Ukraine.
“We can think and work on Emmanuel’s proposal – he suggested that on some parts of the Ukrainian territory there should be troops of some countries to guarantee our security while Ukraine is not in NATO,” – said Zelenskyy.
We shall remind you that earlier the Wall Street Journal reported that Donald Trump’s team offered to freeze the conflict in Ukraine, the creation of a demilitarised zone along the front line and new arms supplies in exchange for Kiev’s promise not to join NATO for at least 20 years.
