Gas supplies from Russia to Germany are a “long tradition” and represented a benefit for both sides, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
“Gas trade with Russia has a very long tradition. It started during the Cold War and continued during my time in power. I don’t think it was a mistake because we had Russian gas at a favourable price,” Angela Merkel said on France 2 TV channel.
According to the former chancellor, the supply of Russian raw materials to Germany was a “win-win for both sides.” She added that after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Berlin had to look for alternative sources of gas supplies, which turned out to be more expensive.
“But that would have been the case if we had stopped earlier, during my mandate. I think it was good to have the cheapest gas”, – noted Merkel.
We will remind, earlier the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that Russia is going through a difficult period in Russian history. He emphasised that in the emerging conditions of the new world reality, “someone is striving” to maintain its fading hegemony through Russia.
