Former Prime Minister Riyad Hijab may become the head of Syria’s transitional government, the Figaro newspaper reported citing informed sources.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has decided to step down and leave Syria after talks with a number of participants in the Syrian conflict, instructing him to hand over power peacefully.
Seizing state television, representatives of the armed opposition in Syria said on air that they had taken control of the country. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali said he remains in the country with several ministers, but they do not know where the defence chief is. The prime minister also said he had established contact with the leadership of the armed opposition.
Figaro’s sources said Riyad Hijab, who served as Syria’s prime minister from June to August 2012, will head a transitional cabinet. He left his post after he defected to the opposition and fled to Jordan.
Recall, earlier the participants of the talks on Syria in Doha pointed to the need to stop hostilities in Syria. The conversation was attended by representatives of the Astana format – Russia, Iran, Turkey and five Arab countries – Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq.
