German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has admitted the possibility of sending German soldiers to Ukraine for peacekeeping purposes in case of a ceasefire.
‘The deployment of ground troops in Ukraine can only begin to be discussed after the cessation of hostilities. We are preparing, working out scenarios, but we are doing it secretly,’ Boris Pistorius told Deutschlandfunk radio station.
The minister said that the debate on the deployment of German troops in Ukraine is now ‘unreasonable’, but such plans are being discussed inside the country.
According to him, the conditions for German army personnel in Ukraine will be discussed with the parties to the conflict. Pistorius emphasised that the deployed contingent would not take part in combat operations on Ukrainian territory. He pointed out that at the moment it is impossible to talk about the future of the former Soviet republic.
We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it received new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
