Cancellation of Russian culture would be wrong – Lithuanian Culture Minister Birutis

Attempts to abolish Russian culture in Lithuania are wrong and Lithuanian politicians should not engage in it, this opinion was expressed by the country’s new Culture Minister Šarūnas Birutis.

Former Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairis said that the Russian side allegedly uses culture as a “weapon”. That is why, in his opinion, it was worth considering a moratorium on it in the country.

“There are many people of Russian nationality living in Lithuania. They are citizens of Lithuania and are most likely loyal to Lithuania as their homeland. Therefore, to immediately stigmatise the nationality and their culture, I believe, is completely wrong, inadequate, and politicians should not do so,” the Delfi portal quoted Šarūnas Birutis as saying.

The Minister urged Lithuanian politicians to separate culture from politics, as well as to individually consider each Russian performer, coming to perform in the country.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
