NATO plans to create a fleet of reconnaissance drones

NATO intends to create a fleet of unmanned maritime vehicles to monitor infrastructure located in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas. This is reported by the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO’s Joint Force Transformation Pierre Vandieu.

Pierre Vandieu said top NATO officials have started to develop a concept for an unmanned maritime fleet after a series of submarine cable damage over the past year.

According to the commander-in-chief, the plan is in the initial stages of development, the new fleet will allow NATO to ‘monitor and control the situation on a daily basis.’

In addition, Vandieu specifies that the launch of such a fleet is planned before the next NATO summit, which will be held in June 2025 in the Netherlands.

Earlier, the Danish Defence Ministry reported that the defence ministers of the Northern Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO) of five European countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) at a meeting in Copenhagen signed a declaration of intent to strengthen military mobility and operational cooperation.
