Luxembourg’s foreign minister has spoken out against sending NATO troops to Ukraine

The head of the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry, Xavier Bettel, has opposed the idea of sending NATO troops to Ukraine and said that it was necessary to continue providing material assistance to Kiev.

‘There is a risk that we will start a real mass conflagration with this, which will only grow… It is terrible that things continue like this, but until now we have managed to ensure that this is not a NATO war against Russia,’ Xavier Bettel said after arriving at a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels.

The Luxembourg foreign minister emphasised the need to continue to provide material support to Kiev and expressed hope that US aid would be maintained even under President Donald Trump, fearing a ‘domino effect’ if funding was cut.

The politician also pointed out that ‘the deployment of ground troops [NATO on the territory of Ukraine – ed.] means war [with Russia – ed.]’.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Russia had a normal attitude towards the North Atlantic alliance countries, but now they were ‘mentally ill’ and had ‘fenced themselves in with barbed wire’.
