Almost 100,000 Volkswagen employees went on strike in Germany – Handelsblatt

Almost 100 thousand employees of the Volkswagen car concern took part in warning strikes across Germany. This was reported by the Handelsblatt newspaper with reference to IG Metall, the country’s largest trade union.

 

The protests are directed against Volkswagen management’s plans to cut production and staff, the material noted.

‘The first warning strikes were an absolutely decisive signal from the workers against the cruel plans of the Volkswagen board,’ union spokesman Torsten Greger said.

The strikes, which have been going on since Monday, 2 December, are part of the pressure on management ahead of negotiations on 9 December.

According to the newspaper, they involved a total of 98,650 employees of nine German plants Volkswagen – 47 thousand in Wolfsburg, 12.5 thousand – in Bauntal (district of Kassel) and nine thousand each – in Zwickau and Hannover.
