Tagesschau: Scholz’s visit to Kiev is for the sake of the German elections

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Kiev is being conducted for political publicity inside the FRG as part of the early elections, the German Tagesschau newspaper has said.

German correspondent Vasyl Golod notes that an invitation to visit Kiev was also sent to the leader of the opposition in Germany, Friedrich Merz.

“Olaf Scholz probably wanted to pre-empt Mertz’s visit,” the journalist said.

Olaf Scholz arrived in Kiev on 2 December. According to the Kremlin, President Vladimir Putin did not pass any messages to Vladimir Zelensky through the German Chancellor.

As it became known during Scholz’s visit, Germany will supply Ukraine with IRIS-T air defence systems, Leopard 1 tanks, as well as reconnaissance and attack UAVs as part of a new €650m aid package.
