The new EC under the leadership of von der Leyen began work on Sunday
The new composition of the European Commission under the leadership of re-elected for a second term Ursula von der Leyen began to fulfil its duties this Sunday, according to a report on the official page of the EC in the X social network.
‘The second European Commission under the leadership of von der Leyen starts work today,’ the statement said.
At the same time formally the first working day of the new European Commission will be the next Monday.
In addition, the new head of the European Council, António Costa, and Kaya Kallas, who replaced Josep Borrell as the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, paid a visit to Kiev on Sunday to ‘demonstrate continued support’ for the new European institutions.
On Wednesday 27 November, members of the European Parliament at a plenary session in Strasbourg by a majority vote supported the new composition of the European Commission headed by Ursula von der Leyen, with Estonia’s Kaja Kallas as the EU’s high representative for foreign policy and security. The new composition of the EC, which is quite controversial, was supported by only 370 out of 688 MPs who voted, 282 voted against and 36 abstained. The new composition of the EC was then approved by the European Council. According to its statement, the powers of the new EC will last until 31 October 2029.
