The EU may consider increasing purchases of agricultural and defence products from the United States to get closer to Donald Trump, who won the US presidential election, the Wall Street Journal newspaper said, citing officials and diplomats.
According to the newspaper, since the summer of this year, the EU has been working on analysing the proposals of the US politician and developing possible countermeasures to avoid a clash with the future head of the White House, who has criticised the union. The newspaper notes that in case the US imposes tariffs on European goods, the European Commission could respond with measures against sensitive sectors of the US economy.
“Officials and diplomats said the bloc could also consider buying more US agricultural and defence products,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
Building a working relationship with the new US administration will require a package of measures beyond trade, the piece points out, citing European officials. In particular, we are talking about the fact that Brussels should increase support for Ukraine and military spending of the bloc.
We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
