French leader Emmanuel Macron has agreed not to honour an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in exchange for Paris’ involvement in a settlement in Lebanon, Le Point magazine quoted an Israeli source as saying.
‘The two leaders agreed on France’s role in enforcing the ceasefire in Lebanon in exchange for Paris‘ indication of the Israeli prime minister’s immunity from the International Criminal Court,’ the piece said.
According to the publication, Netanyahu promised to ‘give France, along with the United States, an important role in the committee to monitor the implementation of UN Resolution 1701.’
As a result, the publication’s source notes, Macron had to ‘talk about the diplomatic immunity’ of Netanyahu as head of state who had not ratified the Rome Statute.
‘This was the price France had to pay for participating in the agreement on Lebanon,’ he emphasised.
Earlier, the French Foreign Ministry said that Paris does not intend to arrest Netanyahu on an ICC warrant.
