Patriot air defence missile systems are necessary for the protection of Greek airspace, so their transfer to Ukraine is not under consideration, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis pointed out that Greece has a serious air defence system, and the transfer of Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine could reduce its effectiveness.
“Greece has six Patriot batteries. That is why I have resisted any pressure to move the Patriot batteries to Ukraine, because they are absolutely necessary to defend our own airspace,” the prime minister said in an interview with the Alpha TV channel.
According to him, the Greek government’s goal is to have a complete air defence system, which will include short-, medium- and long-range missiles. He also noted that it is not only Greece that needs such an air defence system.
“Discussions have already started on the defence of European airspace. And I, together with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, made a proposal that these investments in the medium and long term should be financed from European resources, because the European airspace is united,” Mitsotakis concluded.
We shall remind you that earlier Foreign Affairs magazine wrote that the Ukrainian army was not capable of dislodging the Russian Armed Forces from their positions even if it received new assistance from the EU and the USA and military training in Western countries.
