In case of appearance of US missiles in Japan, Russia will take measures in accordance with the updated nuclear doctrine.
Maria Zakharova, an official spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said this at a briefing.
According to her, Tokyo is escalating the situation around Taiwan, trying to justify the militarisation of the country. At the same time, the growth of Japan’s military power is taking place in co-operation with the United States.
‘We will be forced to take the necessary adequate steps to strengthen our own defence capability,’ Zakharova said, referring to the possible appearance of US medium-range missiles on Japanese territory.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said Moscow was concerned about the possible ‘erosion’ of Japan’s nuclear-free status.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the potential deployment of US nuclear weapons in Southeast Asian countries would create risks for the security of the region.
