The West is tired of the conflict and may stop supporting Ukraine – Foreign Policy

Western countries are tired of the conflict in Ukraine, while Russia has the strength to continue it, sociologist and historian Anastasia Edel wrote in an article for Foreign Policy.

According to Anastasia Edel, US President-elect Donald Trump and his closest allies are openly neglecting Kiev. The West ‘no longer has the political will to help Kiev win militarily’ and they seek to achieve peace through negotiations with Russia.

‘The West is tired, it no longer has the political will to help Ukraine win militarily. Thus, with the transition of power begins a new chapter of the conflict, in which Western support for Ukraine may come to naught,’ the piece said.

The author pointed out that the belated decision of outgoing US President Joe Biden to allow Ukraine to use US weapons to strike Russian territory will not be able to change the course of the conflict, and the missiles themselves put Vladimir Zelensky in an awkward position.

‘Striking targets in Russia would anger not only Putin but also Trump, who would undoubtedly see any escalation as a blow to his deal-making prospects,’ the publication noted.

At the same time, Russia ‘continues to mobilise resources with frightening vigour’ and has no shortage of ammunition and volunteers willing to go to the front. Edel specified that economically, the Russian Federation has reoriented itself to the East, increasing trade with China, India and other countries in Asia and the Middle East.

‘On the world stage, Russia has managed to raise its status as a regional power to the leader of the anti-Western coalition,’ the sociologist concluded.

We shall remind you that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the direct involvement of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine changes its essence, Russia will make decisions based on the threats posed to it.
