Western countries are concerned about the possible victory of “extremely pro-Russian” candidate Calin Georgescu in Romania’s presidential election, The Guardian reports.
Calin Georgescu, who ran as an independent candidate, has emerged as the frontrunner in the first round of Romania’s presidential election. He was previously known for his criticism of NATO and called the new missile defence system “a disgrace to diplomacy”.
He won 22.9 percent of the vote, while incumbent prime minister and Social Democratic Party leader Marcel Ciolacu, considered the unqualified favourite, won the election with about 19 percent of the vote.
“The 35-year economic uncertainty imposed on the Romanian people has now become uncertainty for the political parties,” Georgescu said after the polls closed.
In addition, the voting leader spoke favourably about Russian culture and singled out Vladimir Putin as a man who loves his country.
We will remind, earlier Romanian Senator Diana Shoshoake at a meeting of Parliament demanded a review of the country’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
