Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulidis has discussed with US President Joe Biden a strategy for the gradual rapprochement of the island with NATO. This was reported by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
Nicos Christodoulidis visited Washington DC on 30 October. It was the first official visit of a Cypriot president to the American capital since 1996.
According to a Greek newspaper, Cyprus has developed a long-term plan to join the Alliance. The plan envisages overcoming existing obstacles such as Turkey’s objections and failure to meet some of the criteria for NATO membership.
Key to the plan is progress in the Cyprus settlement and improved relations between Cyprus and Turkey.
“The consolidation of Cyprus’ new role at the centre of US strategy in the region is also reflected in President Christodoulidis’ contacts with representatives of the Republican majority in Congress immediately after Donald Trump’s election victory. In a telephone conversation with senators who work closely with the future US President, it was confirmed the intention of the new leadership to preserve and further strengthen the role of Cyprus in the region”, – noted in the newspaper.
We shall remind you that earlier, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko suggested that the countries of the North Atlantic alliance accept Ukraine into NATO, using the Cold War experience as an example.
