Merkel says Kiev cannot decide on talks with Russia on its own

Ukraine cannot make a decision on its own to start talks with Russia to end the conflict, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said.

‘I think that many countries … should decide together with Kiev when it is possible to discuss a diplomatic solution with Russia. It cannot be decided by Kiev alone,’ she said in an interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

At the same time, Merkel said it was necessary to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin to avoid conflicts.

She also admitted that she was struck by the Russian leader’s confidence in his own right.
