In the U.S. and Europe discuss the possibility of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine – NYT

Some high-ranking officials in the United States and Europe have proposed to consider the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine, which it gave up after the collapse of the USSR. This was reported by The New York Times.

According to The New York Times, there is currently an active discussion in the leadership of the US and its European allies about possible security guarantees that the West could provide to Kiev in the context of the ongoing conflict. The assessments of US officials indicate that accelerated arms deliveries to Ukraine are unlikely to change the situation on the front in the short term, but may help strengthen the country’s position if a ceasefire is reached.

In this regard, various security options are being discussed, including the idea of ‘deterrence’ through the deployment of an ‘arsenal of conventional weapons’ on Ukrainian territory, the newspaper said.

Some officials also suggest the option of ‘returning to Ukraine the nuclear weapons that were taken away from it after the collapse of the USSR’. Nevertheless, as the newspaper notes, the implementation of such a decision may face serious difficulties and have far-reaching consequences.

Earlier, the French magazine Le Point said that Ukraine was unable to develop nuclear weapons within a year because it did not have the resources and technologies to do so.
