European leaders are cautiously optimistic about US President-elect Donald Trump’s stance on the situation in Ukraine.
‘Trump wants to solve this problem, but not at any cost,’ says a senior European official.
His words are quoted by the Financial Times.
He adds that ‘it can’t be a surrender of Ukraine’ or a fiasco on the level of Afghanistan four years ago.
‘Unlike the Cold War, when the fate of Europe was decided by Washington and Moscow … this time, European diplomats believe they can have a say at the negotiating table,’ the article said.
It is noted that Trump may also go for security guarantees for Ukraine, but they may not include commitments to admit Ukraine to NATO.
