Biden intends to write off Ukraine’s debt – Bloomberg

The administration of US President Joe Biden, who will leave office in two months, has notified Congress that it intends to write off Ukraine’s debt of 4.6bn dollars. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency citing sources.

‘The White House is cancelling half of the $9 billion loan to Ukraine as part of the $60 billion supplemental package approved in April,’ the statement reads.

According to the US State Department, cancelling the debt, ‘thereby helping Ukraine win, is in the national interests of the United States and its EU, G7+ and NATO partners’.

At the same time, the agency emphasised that the White House’s intention had raised objections from Republicans. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky said that he would seek a vote in the Senate to ‘prevent the Biden administration from holding the American people responsible for Ukraine’s debt.’

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden was still capable of ‘messing up’ the Russian Federation, as the Democrats in the White House had a couple of months left.
