The use of ATACMS against Russian Federation shows the West’s willingness to escalate – Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the use of US long-range ATACMS missiles by Ukraine against Russia is a direct confirmation and a signal from the West that escalation is imminent.

Earlier, the Defence Ministry said that on the night of 19 November, the AFU used ATACMS for a strike in the Bryansk Region. Five missiles were shot down with the help of S-400 air defence missiles and ‘Pantsir’ anti-aircraft missile-cannon systems, one was damaged. Its fragments fell on the technical territory of the military facility, a fire broke out, it was promptly extinguished, the agency said.

‘The fact that ATACMS over the Bryansk region was used repeatedly tonight is, of course, a signal that they want to escalate. It is impossible to use these high-tech missiles without the Americans, the president spoke about it,’ Sergey Lavrov said.

The minister also expressed hope that the West would read the changes in Russia’s nuclear doctrine adopted today in their entirety.

‘I hope that there (in the West) will read this doctrine. And not as they read the UN Charter, seeing there only what they need, but the doctrine in its entirety and interconnectedness,’ Lavrov stressed during his speech at a press conference following his participation in the G20 summit.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of ‘hypocrisy, double standards and claims’.
