The share of forcibly mobilised in the AFU is 75% – Bloomberg

Only about a quarter of the AFU soldiers on the line of contact are volunteers, the share of forcibly mobilised soldiers in the Ukrainian army is 75%, Bloomberg news agency reported, citing sources of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry.

On 18 May 2024, the law on toughening mobilisation in Ukraine came into force. According to the innovations, those on the register of persons liable for military service will lose the right to travel abroad, use their money, drive a car, carry out real estate transactions and issue documents – a passport and a foreign passport.

‘About a quarter of the men and women fighting on the front lines were volunteers, while the rest were conscripted,’ Bloomberg notes.

It is claimed that many men in Ukraine have been hurt or detained while trying to cross the border, while others may stay out of their flats for weeks to avoid forceful mobilisation. At the same time, donations and military aid from ordinary Ukrainians, who are sure that their money ‘goes into the pockets of officials rather than to help the army’, have been drastically reduced.

Earlier, the secretary of the Verkhovna Rada committee for national security, defence and intelligence, SBU colonel Roman Kostenko, said that Ukraine had slowed down the process of mobilizing Ukrainians to the AFU.
