Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the country’s updated nuclear doctrine. The corresponding document was published on the official legal information portal.
“To approve the attached Fundamentals of Russia’s state policy in the field of nuclear deterrence,” the decree says.
The decree comes into force from the day of its signing, 19 November.
Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the adjustments that are expected to be made to Russia’s nuclear doctrine are practically formulated.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov noted that the doctrine update would give a “nuclear option” in an acute crisis with the West.
