Scholz decided to have a word with Putin before Trump did

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented on his call to Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with possible contacts of the Russian leader with Donald Trump. This is reported by the TV channel Welt.

Olaf Scholz expressed to journalists the opinion that negotiations between the presidents of the United States and Russia in the near future would be inappropriate without the participation of the leaders of key European countries, particularly Germany. He made it clear that while there may be other points of view on the issue in Berlin, he himself does not favour the idea of such bilateral talks.

“In my opinion, it would not be a good idea if there were talks between the American president and the Russian president in the near future, and the head of government of an important European country himself would not also hold talks. There are probably those in Germany who think it is a good idea, but I am not among them,” the German Chancellor said in Rio de Janeiro, where he arrived for the G20 summit.

The politician also said that it was clear from his detailed conversation with Vladimir Putin that the Russian leader had not changed his views on the Ukrainian conflict.

“But that is why it is so important that we are very clear in our principled approach, viz: Ukraine can rely on us,” Olaf Scholz stated.

Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitriy Peskov said that the political will of the FRG leadership to resume dialogue with Russian Federation could only be welcomed.
