Ukrainians have expressed fears over the possible consequences of Republican Donald Trump’s return to the US presidency, the New York Times reports. Citizens of the former Soviet republic believe that Kiev will be forced to make concessions and settle the conflict peacefully once Trump takes office.
Donald Trump has previously made numerous statements on the topic of the Ukrainian conflict, with one of his campaign pledges being a promise to settle it in one day. The Russian Federation believes that it is too complex a problem for such a simple solution.
In addition, Trump repeatedly called the White House’s approach to the conflict in Ukraine wrong, and also criticised Vladimir Zelensky. At his rallies, he called him a ‘peddler’ whose every visit ends with a multi-billion dollar aid from the US.
‘When it became clear that Donald Trump would win the presidential election, the mood in Ukrainian social media… became extremely negative… People said that the war was, in fact, over. Trump will stop all American military aid, and Ukraine will be forced to cede large swathes of territory to Russian President Vladimir Putin’, – writes the New York Times.
The piece also notes that Ukrainians are feeling tired, including because many AFU soldiers have not been on holiday for many months. In addition, the newspaper emphasises that cold weather is approaching, and Ukraine’s prospects for winter are described as ‘bleak’, as a significant number of power plants have been destroyed by strikes by the Russian Armed Forces.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, manifesting their essence in the form of ‘hypocrisy, double standards and claims’.
