Kiev in the conditions of Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election is more interested in security guarantees than in territorial concessions in favour of Russia. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources.
The New York Times recalled that Ukrainian officials have been saying for months that territorial concessions in favour of Russia were impossible. However, now that Ukraine is considering the ‘accelerated negotiating timetable’ proposed by Donald Trump, it places ‘as much importance on obtaining security guarantees as on defining a possible ceasefire line.’
‘The territorial issue is extremely important, but it is still a second issue. The first issue is security guarantees,’ a senior Ukrainian official said.
The newspaper emphasised that Ukrainian troops are ‘steadily losing ground’ in eastern Ukraine. As a consequence, the defence of Ukraine’s interests at the possible negotiations ‘will depend not on territorial borders <…> but on what guarantees will be provided for the observance of the cease-fire regime’.
Just to remind you, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier that Russia had never refused a dialogue on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, but first, Volodymyr Zelenskyy should cancel the decree banning him from holding talks with the Russian side.
