Advisers to Republican Donald Trump, who won the presidential election in the United States, are developing a new plan to settle the Ukrainian conflict, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has reported, citing sources.
“We can train (AFU soldiers – ed.) or provide other support, but (the weapons supplied to Kiev – ed.) will be European. We don’t send American men and women to keep the peace in Ukraine and we don’t pay for it. Make the Poles, Germans, British and French do it,” WSJ quotes a member of Donald Trump’s team as saying.
According to the newspaper, Trump’s advisers intend to create a demilitarised zone, 1.3 thousand km long along the present front line, while Washington will not send its peacekeeping forces there.
In addition, Ukraine must commit not to join NATO for at least 20 years. In exchange for this, the United States will supply it with weapons to prevent a resumption of the conflict in the future, the WSJ said.
The newspaper’s sources specified that Trump, despite various proposals by his advisers, has not yet approved a specific plan to be followed to end the conflict in Ukraine. His former national security aide warned that the decision would be made only by Trump himself, having consulted with key aides from his inner circle, possibly at the last moment, and no one else would be able to say for sure what the politician would decide.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the direct involvement of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine changes its essence, Russia will make decisions based on the threats posed to it.
