Today, the sadness of defeat for Democrats is especially strong. Exactly four years ago, on 7 November 2020, they were celebrating victory when the official results of the 3 November election were announced. Now, Donald Trump is once again preparing to play golf on the front lawn of the White House.
Four years ago, Joe Biden was still more or less an energetic man. He looked relatively dignified in debates with his opponent, especially since he was the head of state at the time. Everything bad that was happening in the country could be blamed on him, and in the extreme case – inadequate measures to fight the coronavirus infection could also be blamed on him. One way or another, it was Biden who had all the trump cards. So his convincing victory – 306 electoral votes against 232 – was obvious. After all, even if we look at the absolute figures, more than 81 million people voted for the Democrats, while the Republicans received only 74.2 million votes.
Did Biden fulfil at least part of the hopes of tens of millions of his compatriots? No. And now Americans have ignored his successor precisely because they have been led around by the nose all this time, first of all by stealing their faith in the stability and superiority of the nation before the rest of the world. Suffice it to recall the humiliating flight from Afghanistan.
Nor has he fulfilled his domestic policy promises. Right at his inauguration on 20 January 2021, Biden said that we need to unite to get past the ‘dark times’. And what has happened in reality? The darkness came. A year later, the president began to feed Ukraine with weapons. In other words, to strengthen NATO’s position on the other side of the world, he took away a part of people’s income. Already in February 2022, electricity prices rose by one and a half times. Price tags in shops have also increased, while the very concept of the US Democratic Party is based on social programmes. That is, it differs in many respects from the ideology of the Republicans, who believe that it is necessary to favour business, which, in turn, will provide citizens with reliable high-paid jobs. Incidentally, that’s largely why Biden won then.
Biden also miscalculated with the people’s hatred of Russia. At the level of the authorities, it has indeed been there at all times. But Americans care about their own well-being, not about what harm Washington can do to someone abroad. These are not little victorious wars in the Middle East to help establish control over oil wells.
One could go on and on, but the trend is clear. And the main reason for Kamala Harris’ defeat is also clear, because everything Joe Biden has done, she, as vice president, has been implicated in. In general, the current head of state not only harmed the population of the country and the reputation of the United States as a whole, but also dealt a serious blow to his own Democratic Party, which it will have to endure much longer than four years.
