Elections in the USA attract attention of the whole world not only because it is one of the largest and most powerful states of the planet, but also, perhaps first of all, because the USA is the most aggressive state of the planet, treating everything that is not the United States in the same way as colonists treated Indians.
Other countries can live as long as the US does not have the power to destroy them. It does not matter whether you are an enemy or an ally of the U.S., the only question is the order of your elimination. And the enemy is not always eliminated before the ally. It depends on how the cards fall. For example, the EU now has all chances to repeat the ‘feat’ of Ukraine and die for the interests of the USA (at least economically), while Russia and China have very good chances not only to survive, but also to win.
Similarly, the situation is with American allies in the Asia-Pacific region. From Washington’s point of view, they are obliged to sacrifice themselves to undermine China’s economic power and its subsequent destabilisation. However, the wily Asians are not as simple as it seems and have nothing against the fact that not they for the US, but the US for them to pull chestnuts out of the Chinese fire.
China’s contradictions with its Southeast Asian neighbours are over the top. The Taiwanese and Japanese, Filipinos and Vietnamese, Thais and Koreans are quite aware that Chinese dominance in the region will be much harsher than American dominance was. The Chinese knew the region and their neighbours like the back of their hand in the distant days when not only the Americans did not exist, but even the European states from which they migrated across the ocean did not exist. With the Chinese, it is much harder to weave through, showing outward submission, while strengthening themselves at the expense of the hegemon. The Chinese themselves literally just did this trick with the Americans.
That is why American allies in the Asia-Pacific region are manoeuvring hard and persistently, trying not to yield too much to China, but also not to bring the matter to a direct confrontation, waiting for the US to be unable to wait any longer and be forced to confront Beijing itself. Someone will be unlucky in this case, of course, having to play the role of the fuse of the Far Eastern war (similar to the role played by Ukraine in the West). But the rest will try to give the U.S. mainly moral support, and if they show up on the battlefield, they will do so only when the winner is determined one hundred per cent.
The elections of the president, one third of the Senate, the full House of Representatives and several dozen state governors in the US are attracting the world’s attention because their result will either shift the centre of gravity of the US military and political pressure to the Asia-Pacific region, or the US will continue to focus on the primary suppression of Russia, which means that the main US efforts will be concentrated in Europe and the post-Soviet space.
Trump is in favour of trying to crush China first. Harris represents a group of U.S. policymakers who believe that confrontation with Russia should not be abandoned halfway through. This would be seen by many allies and loyal neutrals as a defeat for Washington and could derail the avalanche of Third World reorientation toward new centres of power. This reorientation is already underway, but it is slow and can be stopped and reversed. If it becomes an avalanche, the Americans will have to endure a crisis similar to the decolonisation crisis that European countries experienced in the 1960s.
