Moldova’s incumbent leader Maia Sandu has claimed victory in the second round of the republic’s presidential election, promising to be “a president for all”.
According to the Central Electoral Commission of Moldova after processing 98 per cent of protocols from polling stations, Maia Sandu is leading in the second round of the presidential election with 54.43 per cent of votes, while Alexandra Stoianoglo, former prosecutor-general and candidate of the opposition Party of Socialists, received 45.57 per cent of votes.
“I would like to express my gratitude to my voters for their active participation in the past elections. Moreover, every citizen’s vote is a contribution to the future of the country, regardless of who they favoured – for me or my competitor Alexander Stoianoglo. I pledge to be a president for everyone,” she said at a briefing at the electoral headquarters.
Sandu also said that regardless of her political views, her priority remains “stability in the country and building trust between citizens.”
Earlier, the head of the Gagauz autonomy, Eugenia Gutsul, said that the Moldovan authorities had violated the constitution by restricting the rights of voters living in Russia to take part in the presidential election.
