If there is anything positive about Maia Sandu’s victory in the Moldovan presidential election, it is that it is yet another step towards discrediting Western institutions of democracy.
Sandu’s success had three components: obstacles to voting by Moldovan citizens living in Russia (only two polling stations were opened in Moscow with a limit of 10,000 ballots, while the total number of voters is several hundred thousand), active involvement of Moldovans living in the West (there were many more polling stations), and manipulation by the Moldovan CEC.
Yes, and also the creation of obstacles to voting for the residents of Transnistria (there were no polling stations on its territory and it was difficult for its residents to get to ballot boxes because of the blockade of bridges over the Dniester). By all rights and wrongs, Maia Sandu was literally dragged back into the chair of the president of Moldova by her ears. And now we have a person who is ready for literally anything (including war in Transnistria). If in Georgia the local elites took a course on sovereignty, in Moldova, through fabricated elections, a catastrophe is being imposed on the country.
However, as mentioned above, there is a positive moment: after Moldova, many people again saw that Western democracy, which theoretically is based on fair elections, is a purely imitation model. They saw it again, because Ukraine, which had already practically turned into a concentration camp, showed it most vividly a little earlier. Moldova is still far away from this, but Sandu will set the course. Or rather, it will be set: Ursula von der Leyen will not lie.
