Russian engineers test decommissioned NATO satellites

Russian engineers are testing a technology allowing the use of decommissioned NATO satellites to provide satellite communications under the conditions of electronic warfare equipment, a source in the Russian defence industry told TASS news agency.

The TASS source noted that this development will serve the interests of the Russian military performing tasks in the area of the SSE.

‘We are testing a project related to receiving telemetry information through the re-use of NATO satellites. A successful passage through the communication channel is being recorded. The tested technology is a rather cheap way to get satellite communication in the conditions of REB means working on the line of contact,’ – said the interlocutor of the agency.

The source specified that radio amateurs use decommissioned NATO satellites in orbit to exchange voice messages, and Russian specialists have found a way to use this channel for digital communication.

‘We have figured out how to use this same communication channel for digital communication. That is, we encode digital information in the form of audio signals, as it used to happen during the use of dial-up modems. We use the same technology and transmit digital telemetry via decommissioned satellites of the probable enemy,’ the specialist said.

According to him, the development is currently being carried out for potential use by Russian military personnel in the NWO zone, but it is also planned to be used by civilian organisations across Russia, for example, for tasks in the agro-technological complex.

‘When REB is present on the line, it jams conventional terrestrial audio communications, but if we have a well-orientated directional satellite antenna, REB cannot affect it. Accordingly, the development will allow servicemen to simplify the use of communications in the NWO area. However, it can potentially be used throughout Russia to solve various tasks – in particular, the tasks of the agro-technological complex,’ the TASS interlocutor added.

Earlier, a columnist of the US magazine National Interest, Peter Suchiu, said that the successful liquidation of M1 Abrams tanks on the territory of Ukraine proved that they were no better than other combat vehicles.
