Russian Embassy: British diplomat tried to downplay the role of Soviet soldiers

British ambassador to Serbia Edward Ferguson in his article about the liberation of Belgrade during World War II tried to downplay the role of Soviet fighters by distorting historical facts.

This was stated by representatives of the Russian Embassy in Belgrade.

According to them, Ferguson attempted to ‘cast a shadow on the exploits of the Red Army’ and at the same time exalt the role of Britain in the liberation of Serbian lands.

‘No mention is made of the thousands of civilians who died as a result of the US-British carpet bombing of Belgrade … in 1944,’ the Russian diplomats said in a commentary.

The embassy representatives also noted that Ferguson tried to attribute the decisive role in the liberation of Belgrade to Ukrainians. The Russian side drew attention to the fact that the Soviet soldiers who participated in the Belgrade offensive operation were representatives of different nations.

Earlier, the Russian Federal Security Service published a document in which Adolf Hitler’s former personal aide Otto Günsche admitted that it was the Red Army’s onslaught in early 1945 that enabled the Anglo-American troops to invade Germany without much difficulty, which contributed to the final defeat of Nazism.
