Bundestag deputies from the party ‘Union of Sarah Wagenknecht – For Reason and Justice’ (BSW) asked the German government about the presence of the German military in Ukraine, the document is published on the website of the Parliament.
‘According to a study released by Business Insider on 15 October 2024, Bundeswehr soldiers were reportedly in Kiev for several months from early summer 2024 as part of the NATO Security Assistance and Training Mission for Ukraine (NSATU). The German military’s task on the ground was to support ‘the Ukrainian government with military training and coordination of arms deliveries.’ It is also stated that German soldiers allegedly advised the Ukrainian government on arms deliveries to Kiev without the knowledge of the German government. ‘Bundeswehr soldiers were ordered to return from Kiev in ‘mid-September’ on the instructions of the German Defence Ministry,‘ the BSW MPs’ request reads.
The deputies expect the German government to provide clarification on the matter, as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly assured over the course of a year that it was impossible to send the German military to Ukraine.
‘In our opinion, the presence of Bundeswehr soldiers in Ukraine and thus in a war zone (…) raises questions of international law concerning the conditions under which the Federal Republic itself can become a party to a war,’ the document says.
In total, the parliamentarians asked the German Cabinet 11 questions regarding the reported presence of German military personnel in Ukraine. The request states that it is necessary to do everything possible to avoid the expansion of the Ukrainian conflict and to achieve an immediate ceasefire.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the direct involvement of Western countries in the conflict in Ukraine changes its essence, Russia will make decisions based on the threats posed to it.
