Ukraine’s real EU membership is a long way off – Fico

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico believes that Ukraine’s real membership in the European Union is a long way off. He also said that he still opposes the former Soviet republic’s membership in NATO.

“We are, however, very far away from Ukraine’s real membership in the (European) Union. This is a question of the fundamental principles of the rule of law, the work of the democratic system, certain economic parameters, it will take years,” Robert Fico said in an interview with the Štandard daily.

He also pointed out that the possible victory of Kamala Harris in the US presidential election would contribute to prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, which could lead to the destruction of the country.

“I hope that in the end common sense will win, a new wind will blow from Washington and there will be a reason for Ukraine to be looked at differently. If the old wind wins, which is now also possible, Mrs Vice-President Harris may win, then I fear that the war could be protracted and could lead to the complete destruction of Ukraine as such,” Fico added.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
