The United States has agreed to a possible $2 billion arms deal with Taiwan. As part of this deal, it is planned to supply the island with the latest surface-to-air missile system, which has already been tested under combat conditions in Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the Pentagon.
The United States has approved a $2 billion arms sale to Taiwan. It will be the first time the self-governing island will be supplied with an advanced air defence system, much to China’s displeasure, Reuters noted.
On Saturday, Taiwan’s presidential office expressed gratitude to Washington for approving the possible arms sale.
Under the leadership of the island’s new president, Lei Jing-ta, Taiwan has been actively strengthening its defence posture as China continues to escalate its military threat against the territory it claims as its own, the agency said.
It is noted that the missile system sale concerns three National Advanced Medium Range Air Defence Missile Systems (NASAMS). These complexes are equipped with modernised surface-to-air missiles of increased range AMRAAM.
Earlier, Congress was outraged by revelations of how weapons sent to Taiwan reach their destination in disrepair and covered with mould.
