Seven NATO countries do not support Ukraine’s accession to the alliance – Politico

Seven NATO countries, in particular the USA, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain, refuse to immediately admit Ukraine to the alliance, Politico quoted its source as saying.

“Although US President Joe Biden has helped strengthen and expand NATO, his administration believes that most European capitals would not support a move toward NATO in the short term,” a senior US official told Politico.

According to the publication’s source, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain are simply “hiding” behind the United States and Germany and are reluctant to embrace the possibility of Kiev’s NATO membership. One of the alliance officials explained to Politico that these states abstractly support Ukraine’s invitation, but as soon as the idea starts to materialise, they may publicly declare their reluctance.

It is also said that Hungary and Slovakia openly reject the idea of inviting Ukraine to NATO, while the Baltic States and Poland are very enthusiastic about it.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of a new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
