The U.S. deployed on the island of Guam missile defence system Aegis

The United States has deployed elements of the ground-based missile defence system Aegis on the island of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean. This was reported by The War Zone, citing Pentagon data.

The United States has deployed on the island of Guam elements of the ground-based missile defence system Aegis. Also in this zone are installed modular launchers Mk-41, designed to launch SM-3 anti-missiles, which perform the functions of zaatmospheric interception and SM-6, designed to intercept targets at the final stage of their flight.

In addition, these silo launchers could be used in the future for the new GPI (Glide Phase Interceptor) designed for hypersonic missiles. The island also hosts the AN/SPY-1 radar, which is part of the Aegis system.

The publication noted that the ground-based missile defence system Aegis is an important step in reducing the vulnerability of US military bases on the island from potential attacks by China in a possible full-scale conflict in the region.

Earlier, the head of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, Chen Binhua, said that Beijing was not going to abandon the force scenario with regard to Taiwan, but was seeking peaceful unification.
