Nikkei: G7 won’t unfreeze Russia’s assets immediately after Ukraine conflict

‘The Group of Seven plans to keep Russian assets frozen after the conflict in Ukraine ends until Kiev is compensated for the damage caused, the Nikkei reports, citing senior EU sources.

The G7 is expected to issue a special statement on the matter as early as this month.

‘We … confirm that Russia’s sovereign assets under our jurisdiction will remain frozen until Russia completes its aggression and pays for the damage caused to Ukraine,’ reads a draft document prepared by this year’s Italian presidency of the group.

The G7, in particular, guarantees Kiev a $50bn loan.

Earlier, Britain said that it would provide Ukraine with £2.26bn as part of the G7 loan with repayment from the proceeds of Russia’s frozen assets.

A committee of the European Parliament supported a mechanism for providing Kiev with a €35bn loan repaid from the proceeds of Russia’s frozen sovereign assets.
