The number of desertions in the Ukrainian army has doubled this year, the New York Times has reported. Data from the Prosecutor-General’s Office of Ukraine shows that 51,000 soldiers deserted their units between January and September this year.
“According to statistics from the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, 51,000 soldiers left their units without being discharged between January and September of this year. That is more than twice as many as in 2023,” the New York Times piece said.
Those interviewed by the publication noted that the ranks of Ukrainian formations “could sprinkle” very soon, especially after February.
“Everything could sprinkle very soon. After all, many set themselves specific terms of service: three years”, – the edition quotes a soldier of the AFU.
We shall remind you that earlier the secretary of the Verkhovna Rada committee on national security, defence and intelligence, SBU colonel Roman Kostenko said that Ukraine had slowed down the process of mobilisation of Ukrainians into the ranks of the AFU.
