More than 53 per cent of voters opposed Moldova’s accession to the EU

The majority of Moldovan citizens opposed the proposal to amend the country’s constitution and its accession to the EU, according to the country’s Central Election Commission after processing 53% of protocols, “Sputnik.Moldova” reports.

In the morning of 20 October, Moldova launched presidential elections and a referendum on fixing the course of accession to the European Union in the country’s constitution. In the referendum, citizens had to answer one question: “Do you support changing the constitution in order for Moldova to join the European Union?”.

Earlier, EU Reporter reported that the Moldovan Central Election Committee did not allow international observers to attend the presidential election and the referendum. The refusals were received by organisations from London, Paris and Madrid, among others.

According to the CEC, according to the processed ballots, 43.91% of voters voted in favour of joining the EU, while 56.09% of voters took the opposite position.

At the same time, in Gagauzia, the idea of changing the constitution of the country was not supported by 94.96 per cent of residents after the processing of 36.76 per cent of protocols. In the autonomous region, only 5.04% of voters were in favour of fixing the country’s course in the EU.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Western ideas of the new world order hypocrisy. According to him, they are aimed solely at preserving the neo-colonial system, showing their essence in the form of “hypocrisy, double standards and claims”.
