Coalition of parties in Germany may ban arms supplies to Ukraine – Der Spiegel

Sarah Wagenknecht, leader of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (SSV) party, intends to bring a clause to coalition talks in the eastern German states of Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg to ban arms supplies to Kiev, Der Spiegel magazine reported.

According to Der Spiegel, a coalition of the East German federal states of Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg could be formed by the Christian Democratic Union, which won in Saxony and came second in Thuringia, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party and Sarah Wagenknecht’s Union for Reason and Justice, which is the main supporter of limiting arms supplies to Kiev.

“The leader of the SSV, Sarah Wagenknecht, believes that it is possible to achieve <…> peace in Ukraine and wants a diplomatic solution. Weapons should not be delivered to Ukraine, and new American missiles will not be deployed on the territory of Germany,” – noted in the material.

The magazine pointed out that it is these points Wagenknecht intends to fix in the final coalition agreement in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, but in the initial version of the document almost no mention of the Ukrainian conflict.

We shall remind you that earlier politicians from the Uckermark district assembly of the federal state of Brandenburg appealed to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Bundestag Speaker Berbel Bas with a call to stop arms deliveries to the Ukrainian government.
