Sri Lanka’s foreign minister says plans to apply for the country to join BRICS

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has announced plans to apply for the country’s accession to BRICS and the BRICS New Development Bank at a summit in Kazan.

‘Sri Lanka has decided to apply to join BRICS and the New Development Bank…. I have already sent letters to my colleagues in BRICS member states asking for support,’ TASS quoted him as saying.

According to the minister, Sri Lanka’s deputy foreign minister in Kazan will submit a formal application for accession.

Russian Ambassador to Havana Viktor Coronelli said earlier that Cuba had already submitted an official application for partner status in BRICS.
