The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen made a proposal to discuss what to do with refugees from Ukraine after 2026, RIA Novosti reported.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has proposed to “urgently discuss the fate of 4.5 million Ukrainians” who have been granted the right to “temporary protection” in the EU countries, taking into account Ukraine’s needs and limited European resources.
“Some 4.5 million Ukrainians currently enjoy temporary protection status in the EU, their special status has been extended until March 2026,” she recalled.
Von der Leyen proposed to develop recommendations for next steps in this area and to consider options for supporting countries that receive a significant number of refugees from Ukraine. These proposals will be discussed at the EU summit on 17-18 October.
Currently, Ukrainian refugees are allowed to stay in the EU until March 2026.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the split between Ukraine and its key European partners was becoming more and more obvious.
