EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrell said at a press conference following a meeting of foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states in Luxembourg that the actions of the Georgian authorities ‘alienate the country from the EU’ and ‘incline it towards authoritarianism’.
Head of Diplomacy Josep Borrell said that the actions, statements and election promises of Georgia’s ruling party are taking the country away from the EU accession path and are evidence of ‘authoritarianism’, so the EU accession process is de facto suspended.
‘The ruling parties, their recent actions, statements and election promises are taking the country away from the European path and are leading to authoritarianism. This is why the accession process is de facto suspended. You are aware of the Commission’s decisions regarding access to European funding,’ Borrel said.
Georgia responded to the words of the EU head. Member of Parliament Irakli Kirtskhalia said that such statements do not just contain double or triple standards, but are extremely unfair and removed from reality.
We shall remind you that earlier the former Minister of Culture of Georgia reported about pressure on her from the European Union.
