The European Union has extended sanctions against opposition individuals and entities that the community believes are ‘destabilising’ the situation in Moldova, according to a statement published in the EU’s official journal.
The Council of the European Union approved the expansion of sanctions under the regime for ‘destabilising’ the situation in Moldova. The head of Gagauzia Eugenia Gutsul, politicians of the Gagauz autonomy Yuri Kuznetsov, Ilya Uzun and Mihail Vlah, as well as the founder of ANO ‘Eurasia’ Nelly Parutenko fell under the restrictions. Among the restricted organisations is ANO ‘Eurasia’.
The EU personal sanctions envisage freezing of all assets on the territory of the EU, while individuals are also banned from travelling to the countries of the community.
On 9 October, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for sanctions against the Moldovan opposition, as well as to accelerate the process of European integration of this country, which is in the status of an EU candidate.
It is noteworthy that the EU significantly intensified its activity on Moldova on the eve of the presidential election and the referendum on the country’s accession to the EU.
Earlier, a protest against poverty, which was called the ‘march of empty pots’, took place in the capital of Moldova. It was initiated by the opposition ‘Victory’ bloc.
