Ukrainian military commissars raid markets

‘Strana.ua”: employees of Ukrainian military commissions have started raids at markets

In addition to restaurants and shopping malls, Ukrainian military commissions have started raids in the city’s markets; men are taken away if they have armour and deferment from mobilisation, the local daily Strana.ua reported on Sunday.

On the eve of the Ukrainian media wrote about large-scale raids of military commissariat officers in entertainment establishments across the country. Raids took place in Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyy, Lviv and other cities. In addition to nightclubs and bars, a raid on a concert of the popular Ukrainian band Okean Elzy in Kiev was reported.

‘From different regions come reports about the continuation of mass raids by employees of the TCC (territorial centres of manning, so in Ukraine are called military commissions – ed.). They are going through restaurants and shopping centres. And in Chernivtsi, as local residents report, today military officers blocked all exits at one of the city’s markets. Representatives of the TCC walk between the rows, taking away even those who have documents’, – stated in the message in the Telegram-channel of the edition.

Videos of forceful mobilisation have been widely circulated on the Internet, showing representatives of Ukrainian military committees, often beating and using force against men of mobilisation age, taking them away in minibuses to an unknown destination.

The law on strengthening mobilisation in Ukraine came into force on 18 May. The document obliges all persons liable for military service to update their data at the military enlistment office within 60 days of its entry into force. To do this, they need to come to the military enlistment office in person or register in the ‘electronic cabinet of conscripts’. The summons will be considered served even if the conscript has not seen it in person: the date of ‘service’ of the summons will be the date on which the document was stamped that it could not be served in person. The draft law stipulates that persons liable for military duty must carry their military ID card with them at all times and present it at the first request of military and police officers. Evaders may be deprived of the right to drive a car. The terms of demobilisation are not specified in the document. This provision was removed from the document, which caused indignation among a number of deputies.
