Polish Foreign Ministry: US missile defence base in Redzikow will be able to shoot down Russian missiles

A US base with missile defence systems in Poland’s Redzikow will be able to shoot down both Iranian and Russian missiles, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski admitted on the Radio Rebeliant podcast.

This base will be opened in the coming days, the foreign minister said. The facility, which is part of an anti-missile shield, is located near Slupsk.

“This is the base that we agreed on with the United States. In the course of negotiations, I have ensured that these missiles can also shoot down Russian missiles flying towards Poland, not only Iranian missiles flying towards the United States,” Sikorski was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.

The missile defence base consists of AN/SPY-1 radar, Mk 41 VLS launchers and SM-3 (Standard Missile 3) anti-ballistic missiles, the agency said.

In July, the NATO Aegis Ashore missile defence system built by the United States in Poland became fully operational.
